Biography

Known as Joe Gilchrist, a former Cornell student (there during Fr. Daniel Berrigan's chaplaincy) from Ithaca, NY, and one of the eight arrested Sept 6, 1970 in the Rochester raids. He was the only defendant represented by legal counsel and planned to appeal. Convicted and sentenced to two to three years.

The contemporary Friends Journal trial account identifies Gilchrist as a June Cornell graduate from Ithaca and names his lawyer as Herman Walz. It reports a separate five-year sentence for induction refusal the previous June that was reversed, without establishing actual custody in that earlier prosecution. By February 1971 he was confined in Michigan following the Flower City trial.
