Biography
Joseph DeLaine was a minister who organized the Clarendon County, South Carolina school-desegregation campaign that became part of Brown v. Board of Education. After segregationists burned his church and fired on his home, he returned fire and fled South Carolina. A warrant was issued on October 11, 1955, but DeLaine was never arrested or confined on the charge. He lived in New York while South Carolina pursued extradition, and the charge remained unresolved until he received a posthumous pardon in 2000.
