Biography
John H. Calhoun was the head of Atlanta's NAACP, jailed for contempt in 1956 for refusing to hand over the organization's books to Georgia state revenue agents in the state's drive to tax the NAACP out of existence. He was released after four hours and given a one-year suspended contempt sentence by a judge who openly avowed segregationist views.
