Biography

The Rev. Theodore R. Gibson was president of the Miami branch of the NAACP, cited for contempt by the Florida Legislative Investigating Committee (the segregationist 'Johns Committee') in December 1959 for refusing to bring the branch's membership lists to its hearings. His resistance led to the landmark Gibson v. Florida Legislative Investigation Committee.

Sentence: Six months in prison and a $1,200 fine, with an additional six months if the fine was not paid. The U.S. Supreme Court reversed the contempt judgment on March 25, 1963. Actual service of the sentence has not been established.
