Biography
Brendan Maslauskas Dunn is an anti-war organizer, journalist and member of the Industrial Workers of the World who helped found the Evergreen State College chapter of Students for a Democratic Society and organized with Port Militarization Resistance. Police arrested him for pedestrian interference on May 22, 2006 after he stood in front of a Stryker convoy approaching the Port of Olympia. Seattle police arrested him again at an anti-war rally in Cal Anderson Park on October 5, 2006 after an officer seized an anarcho-syndicalist flag carried by his group; the charges were later dismissed and the arrest led to civil litigation. A federal decision also references a June 2007 Tacoma arrest, but the accessible record does not establish its exact day or a custody interval. He later helped expose Army employee John Towery’s infiltration of the anti-war movement.
On July 21, 2014 Judge Ronald B. Leighton granted summary judgment for the defendants in Panagacos v. Towery and dismissed the civil claims with prejudice. The decision addressed the claimed connection between Army surveillance and police conduct, including qualified immunity and limitations issues. This civil ruling was not a criminal conviction, acquittal or jail discharge, and it does not describe the outcome of any later appeal. Industrial Worker’s April 2008 report identifies Dunn’s individual charge in the Flag 3 case as felony assault on an officer, distinguishing it from the resisting-arrest and obstruction counts against Jake Erwin and Ryan Tompkins. It says prosecutors dropped Dunn’s charge and identifies Larry Hildes as the attorney for the resulting civil lawsuit. The article reports questioning about anarchist affiliations while in custody, but supplies no exact physical release time or demonstrated multiday interval.
