Biography
Ángel Luis Class-Alvarado was arrested by the Navy on April 27, 2001 during the Vieques protest at Cayo Yayí, also known as Fisherman’s Island. The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques identified this defendant among those jailed in June 2001.
In United States v. Mulero-Joubert, the First Circuit reversed the trespass conviction on May 8, 2002 because the prosecution had not proved notice that the area was closed. An individual sentence, total time served and precise release date have not been established.
The First Circuit opinion of May 8, 2002 individually names this appellant among those arrested by Navy personnel on April 27, 2001 at Cayo Yayí, also called Fisherman’s Island, and tried on June 5. It reversed the trespass convictions because the government failed to prove actual or constructive notice that the island was closed. The court distinguished military control from ownership and explained that a security-zone rule published after the arrests could not itself give advance notice; anti-Navy chants likewise did not establish knowledge of closure. The decision supplies no individual sentence, completed custody duration or physical release date, so the appellate judgment is not used as a release endpoint.
