Biography

Zoraida Figueroa Arenas was a teacher and activist imprisoned for protesting U.S. Navy operations in Vieques. The First Circuit’s opinion in United States v. Figueroa-Arenas identifies the July 6, 2001 conviction. Contemporary Associated Press reporting describes a 30-day prison sentence. David Gonzalez’s report published August 5, 2001 describes Figueroa’s release after completing that sentence and visits to the protest camp outside the federal prison in Guaynabo.

The reporting supports 30 days served and a completed release. It does not establish a precise calendar release date, and no date is supplied from the report’s relative reference to a Tuesday.
