HAYMARKET POLICE MONUMENT BOMBING
In early October 1969, days before the Days of Rage, the Weathermen bombed the Haymarket Police Monument in Chicago — a statue commemorating the police killed in the 1886 Haymarket affair and long a symbol of the conflict between labor and the police. The blast destroyed the statue.
It was one of the group's earliest symbolic bombings, deliberately targeting a monument that represented state power over radical movements. The statue was rebuilt and bombed again by the Weathermen the following year before being moved to a secure location.
