GREENWICH VILLAGE TOWNHOUSE EXPLOSION
On March 6, 1970, a bomb under construction detonated accidentally in a townhouse on West 11th Street in Greenwich Village, killing three Weather members — Diana Oughton, Ted Gold, and Terry Robbins. The group had been building an antipersonnel bomb reportedly intended for a soldiers' dance at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
The disaster was a turning point. Shocked by the deaths and by how close they had come to a massacre, the survivors reconstituted the group as the Weather Underground, renounced attacks aimed at killing people, and adopted a policy of bombing property — with advance warnings — rather than taking lives. The explosion drove the group fully underground.
