Biography
William Rieck was a married farmer with one child and one of seventeen defendants in the 1934 Sisseton, South Dakota, anti-eviction prosecution. The United Farmers’ League had organized resistance to foreclosures and evictions in Roberts County. The farmers faced rioting charges carrying up to ten years in prison. Arthur LeSuer helped defend them, and the jury acquitted all seventeen in 1934.
Labor Defender, April 1934: The Sisseton article explicitly places Rieck among seventeen farmers taken to jail on rioting charges and subsequently released on United Farmers League bonds after resistance to the Nieland eviction. It describes his household as a wife and one child, without feed or coal. This establishes actual custody and completed bail release, but not their precise dates or duration.
