Julius Walstadt was one of seventeen anti-eviction farmers charged with rioting — facing up to ten years — at Sisseton, South Dakota in 1934, part of the United Farmers' League resistance to foreclosures.
The March 5, 1934 Daily Worker, spelling his surname Walstad, reports the United Farmers League state secretary held in jail with seventeen other Roberts County farmers after restoring Harry Nieland and his family to a foreclosed farm. Labor Defender, April 1934: The Sisseton article names Walstadt among seventeen farmers actually taken to jail on rioting charges after restoring Henry Nieland to his foreclosed farm. It explicitly reports all seventeen out on bail raised by the United Farmers League and describes Walstadt as having a wife and six children. The Daily Worker of October 17, 1934, page 3, spells this United Farmers League organizer's surname Walstad (Walsted in the headline) and reports his selection for an American farmers' delegation to the Soviet Union. It refers retrospectively to his arrest with sixteen other South Dakota farmers for resisting an eviction. This corroborates the anti-eviction organizing and existing Sisseton case; it does not establish a new arrest, actual travel on the proposed itinerary, exact release or completed duration.
