Biography

Richard Harris was a Greenpeace climber arrested during the October 22, 1987 acid-rain banner protest at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota. A contemporary Earth First! account names him with Phillip Templeton as the climbers forced to surrender after authorities cut the banner ropes, and identifies Ken Hollis, Steve Loper and Mike Roselle as the other arrested participants. The five appeared before a federal magistrate on January 25, 1988 and received $500 fines, three-month suspended sentences and thirty days in federal jail in Rapid City. The account says they served the thirty-day term. Harris’s exact prison-admission and actual release dates are not given.
