Biography
Peter John Gabriel McMullen was an Irish republican held in United States custody in connection with a British extradition request. After earlier immigration proceedings, he was arrested and held for extradition on December 24, 1986. His case was among the extradition fights that tested whether Irish republican offences would be treated as political offences by United States courts.
U.S. detention endpoint: transfer, not freedom
The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs archival record, NAI/DFA/2021/50/303, physical page 4, paragraphs 7–9, confirms that McMullen ceased contesting extradition and was escorted from New York to London in March 1996. This ends the listed U.S. detention episode but does not establish release to freedom. The individual chronology on physical page 8 dates a report of his decision to March 29; it does not independently date the flight or handover. The endpoint is therefore recorded at month precision. Both relevant original pages were rendered and visually reviewed. His later British plea and release are not substituted for the U.S. endpoint. A usable individually identified portrait remains unresolved.
