Biography
Patrick Nee was convicted over the American end of the 1984 arms shipment carried by the trawler Valhalla and transferred to the Marita Ann off the Irish coast. He received four years, as did Robert Andersen; Joseph Paul Murray Jr. received ten.
Gunrunning sentence and distinct later custody
The contemporary July 1, 1987 UPI sentencing report, read as indexed text because direct retrieval returned 403, names Judge Joseph Tauro and Tuesday's sentencing, June 30. The original Federal Register, printed page 27098, physical page 120, visually verified, independently names Nee, his individual offense and court, and June 30, 1987 as the listed conviction date. This is a judicial event, not proof of actual prison admission. His publisher's biography distinguishes early parole after nearly two years on the Valhalla case from a later robbery prison term. The authorized BOP lookup uniquely returns Patrick Joseph Nee, 15909-038, age 81, and an April 25, 2000 federal-custody endpoint; that later endpoint is not transplanted onto the gunrunning case. Exact historical custody dates remain blank.
Portrait identity caution
The Globe's own photo correction says an earlier image showed his son, also named Patrick Nee. Neither that mistaken version nor an unverified book-cover face is copied as a portrait. An independently verified usable image remains unresolved.
