Biography

Norris Dendy, a Black trucking operator, was arrested July 4, 1933 at Goldville on a reckless-driving accusation after police fired at his truck tires. Police took him to the Clinton lockup; his family was denied bail. The article describes men beating him in the cell and removing him by car while his mother was assaulted. He was found dead the following morning with a fractured skull, hanged. The headline’s July 4 lynching shorthand is not used to override the next-morning chronology or invent an exact death day. Arrest and fatal removal from custody are documented, but no judicial conviction or measured total is established. Daily Worker, January 20, 1936, original PDF page 7.
