Biography
Mary Knowles was a librarian employed by the Quaker Plymouth Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania, indicted for contempt of Congress in December 1956 for refusing to answer a Congressional committee's questions about her associations. Her stand inspired the 1956 film 'Storm Center.'
The May 1999 Friends Journal obituary individually identifies Mary Knowles, former William Jeanes Memorial Library librarian in Plymouth Meeting and the subject of the contempt-of-Congress dispute. It records her death in Oakland on November 22,1998. This corrects the previous November 1997 MONTH value to the documented exact day. The obituary’s age 87 does not supply an exact birth date; the existing year-only birth value remains unchanged.
