Biography
Bernhard Deutch was a former Cornell student and University of Pennsylvania physics graduate student prosecuted for refusing to name other people while testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1954. He received a ninety-day sentence for contempt of Congress. After the D.C. Circuit affirmed the conviction, the Supreme Court reversed it on June 12, 1961. Whether Deutch spent any time in custody before the reversal remains unresolved.
