Biography
Marie Reed Haug was a Cleveland union business representative and Progressive Party committeewoman. Prosecutors charged her with filing false Taft-Hartley non-Communist affidavits and conspiring with other union and Communist Party activists. A jury convicted her on January 29, 1958. After the appeals ended, she served an 18-month sentence at the federal women’s prison in Alderson, West Virginia.
The April 17, 1961 National Guardian reports attorney Jack C. Day’s petition to reduce the Haug couple’s sentences. Benjamin Spock and Cleveland educational and civic figures submitted affidavits arguing that simultaneous parental imprisonment would harm their ten-year-old daughter. The article identifies the Haugs as Cleveland Ethical Society members and cites repeal of the affidavit law and their prospects on probation. The petition was a request, not proof that a reduction had been granted or that either parent had entered prison.
