Biography
Luz María Berríos Berríos was prosecuted in the Wells Fargo case involving Los Macheteros. The individual appellate record distinguishes her August 30, 1985 arrest and detention in Mexico from FBI arrest upon arrival in Miami on September 3. Her pretrial detention was followed by release on bond; it was not continuous with later sentence service. She pleaded guilty to a conspiracy count on September 6, 1988 and received a five-year sentence on October 31, with credit for pretrial detention. She remained on bond after sentencing and began serving at FCI Lexington by December 1988. The number-matched federal locator records that she was no longer in BOP custody as of December 6, 1990. This date does not establish the end of parole. The legacy claim of uninterrupted imprisonment until the 1999 clemency releases is not supported by her individual custody record.
Separate custody periods and corrected endpoint
The original individual bail opinion, 791 F.2d 246, distinguishes August 30, 1985 Mexican detention from September 3 FBI arrest in Miami. Failed surety and later appellate remand are not proof of actual bail release. The contemporary October 31, 1988 sentencing report records five years imposed by Judge Clarie and continued freedom on bond; direct retrieval failed, so its indexed report is identified as the evidence used. The original November 30 AP report, printed page 4, shows the surrender deadline was extended to December 1. The original December 30 report, printed page 14, confirms actual sentence service had begun at Lexington. The December 30 report established service within the month; the newly reviewed December 1 UPI dispatch independently establishes actual admission that day. The number-matched BOP locator, checked October 12, 2026, supplies December 6, 1990 as the federal custody endpoint. The original December 7 AP report, printed page 8, independently reports release and distinguishes approximately sixteen pretrial months from later sentence custody. Neither the legacy 1999 date nor time on bond belongs in a continuous prison interval. An undated Butler County row is retained without unsupported copied endpoints. The exact initial bail-release date remains unresolved. Lexington admission is now independently verified as December 1, 1988.
