Biography
Juan Haro was a leader and head of security for the Denver Chicano movement organization Crusade for Justice. Federal prosecutors accused him of possessing four unregistered hand grenades after police informant José Cordova Jr. claimed Haro supplied them. A jury convicted Haro on January 22, 1976, and he received four concurrent six-year terms. In the separate state prosecution alleging a plot to bomb Denver police stations, a jury acquitted him in 1977 after the defense exposed serious problems with Cordova’s testimony and the government’s evidence. Haro served 22 months of the federal sentence and later wrote about the case in his memoir, The Ultimate Betrayal.
