Biography
Edward Yellin was a former Gary, Indiana steelworker and University of Illinois graduate fellow convicted of contempt of Congress and sentenced to a year in jail for refusing, at a 1958 HUAC hearing in Gary, to answer questions about his politics. His case became Yellin v. United States.
In their memoir, Ed and Jean Fagan Yellin identify his birth year as 1927 and his birthplace as Brooklyn. The account distinguishes his nominal one-year contempt sentence from actual imprisonment: he was released on his own recognizance after arraignment, remained free during appeals, and ultimately avoided the prison term after the Supreme Court reversed the conviction. No prison-admission or actual release date is established by this account.
