Biography

Bill Sroka is named in the Connecticut ILD notice concerning jailed workers and the release campaign. The notice says George Foster’s release helped release Jackson, Powers and Sroka; its collective wording is ambiguous given Powers’s documented later confinement. No exact personal release date or complete custody is inferred. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/dailyworker/1932/v09-n043-NY-feb-19-1932-DW-LOC.pdf#page=3

Contemporary Connecticut jail report

The July 2, 1932 Daily Worker report of a Connecticut campaign speech says Governor Cross continued to hold Bill Siroka in jail for leading the Putnam strike. It names Joe Jackson and Fred Powers in the same release campaign. The earlier February 19 Connecticut International Labor Defense notice spells the name Bill Sroka and likewise pairs him with Jackson and Powers. The matching state, unusual name variant and paired defense campaign support recording this as additional context for the Connecticut profile. The newspaper’s July spelling is preserved; it does not establish that this Connecticut prisoner was the separate Michigan Young Communist League organizer currently recorded as Bill Siroka. The earlier collective release wording and the later ongoing-jail report are both retained, without assuming an intervening release, rearrest, or continuous confinement. No exact admission, discharge, statutory charge, sentence or complete custody total is supplied.

Daily Worker, July 2, 1932, page 5; Daily Worker, February 19, 1932, page 3.

The October 19, 1931 Young Worker identifies Sroka as the National Textile Workers Union’s youth organizer at Putnam and reports his six-month jail sentence.
