Biography

Marshall describes Hawkes as a surveyor and civil engineer arrested at his Tamaroa, Illinois home on August 22, 1862, with several neighboring men also detained. He was transported to Washington and confined in the Old Capitol Prison for six weeks. The account reports release without charges or trial and connects the arrests to a local Union League accusation whose contents were not disclosed. Source: John A.
