Biography

Marshall identifies Williams as a resident of Spring Garden, Jefferson County, Illinois. He says Williams was arrested at home on September 1, 1862, transported under guard to Washington, and confined with other Illinois detainees in room 16 of the Old Capitol Prison. The account reports release after two months on an allegiance oath and bond, without a trial or specified charges. Source: John A.
