Biography

The July 9, 1934 Western Worker identifies Sylvester Sylva as a PuertoRican Marine Workers Industrial Union seaman arrested by the San Francisco Red Squad on Friday when visiting Lillian Lewis in jail. Judge Dunne imposed thirty days on Saturday, alleging a visit to a white woman Communist. After an ILD appeal the judge offered suspension; the ILD refused that compromise and the report says Dunne was forced to release Sylva unconditionally. These relative days do not establish exact calendar endpoints, and thirty days was imposed rather than completed service.
