Biography
Luke Anson Hinman, whose full name was Loyal Anson Hinman, was a California labor organizer and veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Battalion. He served as a scout in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, returning to agricultural union organizing after the International Brigades withdrew in 1938. Working for the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing and Allied Workers, he organized fruit pickers during the 1939 Earl Fruit Company strike in Marysville. Authorities jailed him for violating Yuba County's anti-picketing ordinance, and his attorney obtained bail through habeas corpus. Hinman later settled in Covelo, where he worked as a millhand until retiring in 1970. He died there on May 3, 1994.
His Fall 1994 Volunteer obituary identifies him as Luke (Loyal Anson) Hinman, reports cancer as his cause of death at Covelo on May 3 at age 88, and names daughter Agatha. Born in a Sacramento Valley town, he had organized Northern California cannery and agricultural workers before Spain. He joined the Lincoln headquarters company in winter 1937 and was chief scout from Teruel through the September 1938 International Brigade withdrawal. It associates his later arrest and jail sentence with organizing fruit pickers against DiGeorgio; it supplies no additional dated custody interval beyond the existing agricultural-organizing case. In the 1940s he settled at Covelo, working as a Louisiana Pacific millhand until 1970. Source: https://alba-valb.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Fall-1994.pdf#page=14
