Biography

Stepan Chinevich, also recorded as Stepan Hinievich, was a Belarusian laborer born in 1886 near Minsk in the Russian Empire. He immigrated to the United States in 1907, later spent time in Canada, and joined the Union of Russian Workers in Seattle in 1917 and the Industrial Workers of the World in 1919. Authorities arrested him several times beginning in 1917. The federal government deported him on February 1, 1921.

The September 1920 One Big Union Monthly lists this detainee under the printed variant "Stephen Hinievich" among named IWW members then being held at Ellis Island, New York, pending deportation to Russia. This contemporary list establishes actual immigration custody by the time of publication; it supplies no admission date or completed deportation date. Identification is supported by the existing variant-name and Russian-deportation context.
