Biography

Pavel Grib was born 1887 in Minsk, Russia (present-day Belarus). Worked as a machinist, laborer. Immigrated to the United States in 1912.

His wife and two children remained in Russia when he emigrated. In 1919 he joined both the Industrial Workers of the World and the Union of Russian Workers in Seattle, where he became the URW branch’s financial secretary. Arrested on February 7, 1920, at a lumber camp near Ashford, Washington, and deported to Russia on February 1, 1921.

Adapted from Kenyon Zimmer, Red Scare Deportees (kenyonzimmer.com), compiled from INS deportation case files.

The September defense report lists Paul Grib among nineteen IWW members held at Ellis Island awaiting deportation to Russia. The report records their stated refusal to appeal to the courts. It confirms confinement at the reporting time and does not establish intake or actual deportation dates.

Case

Arrested: Feb 7, 1920
Incarcerated: Feb 7, 1920
Released: Feb 1, 1921
In exile since: Feb 1, 1921
Sentence: Arrested on February 7, 1920 and deported on February 1, 1921. The source records no release on bail or bond, so custody pending deportation is recorded from arrest to sailing; if evidence of an interim release surfaces, the span should be shortened.
