Biography

Sam Chappa was a Young Communist League member arrested with Gary organizer Ethel Stevens while distributing meeting leaflets outside the Queen Anne Candy factory at Hammond, Indiana. A November14,1929 dispatch reports riot charges, a heavy bail demand and both prisoners held incommunicado. Factory workers left the plant to support the meeting and protested the arrests. The dispatch does not explicitly date the arrest itself, report bail posted or establish a final disposition or complete custody duration.
