Biography
Ruby Sales organized with SNCC in Alabama. Her 1965 imprisonment preceded the attack in which Jonathan Daniels saved her life.
In her 1994 memoir in The Witness, fellow detainee Gloria House Manana identified Ruby Sales as one of three women confined together during the 1965 Lowndes County civil-rights arrests. She described their cell as unsanitary, with a blocked toilet and a faucet that did not work, and recalled prisoners singing freedom songs together across the segregated cell areas. This retrospective account supplements the contemporary detention record without changing its dates or duration.
