Biography
Robert Williams was a member of the Southern California Black Panther Party, prosecuted alongside Romaine Fitzgerald and Luxey Irvin in 1969–1970. He was held in Los Angeles County Jail and convicted in the Torrance proceedings on charges involving an assault on police, robbery and kidnapping. The party challenged the prosecutions and reported further battery charges and mistreatment while the defendants remained in custody.
The April 25, 1970 Black Panther reports that the jury convicted Robert Williams and Luxey Irwin (Irvin) of first-degree robbery, kidnapping and assault on April 3, 1970. It describes their prosecution with Romaine Fitzgerald and approximately half a year of pretrial custody. The newspaper's allegations of framing and mistreatment are the party's account, not independent judicial findings. April 3 dates the reported verdict, not a prison admission, sentence or release.
This pretrial report names Williams and Luxey Irwin together on ten counts each involving attempted murder, felonious assault, robbery and kidnapping. The party disputed the charges as a political frame-up. This records the accusation stage before the April 1970 verdict, without replacing that later disposition or creating another overlapping incarceration.
