Biography

Bruce Richards was a Los Angeles Black Panther wounded in the October 18, 1969 confrontation in which fellow Panther Walter “Toure” Pope was killed. Richards was jailed pending trial on assault-with-intent-to-murder charges. In April 1970 the party’s legal-defense committee reported that he remained in Los Angeles County Jail and had faced further assaults and charges while in custody.

The contemporary report places wounded Richards in the jail facilities of Los Angeles County Hospital after the October 18, 1969 shooting. It reports assault-with-intent-to-murder charges and says he had previously been released from the Tracy juvenile prison before joining the party. The hospital detention belongs to the existing prosecution, rather than a second overlapping case.
