Biography

Robert Manewitz was a St. Louis trade unionist and Communist Party organizer prosecuted with four others under the Smith Act. A jury convicted him on May 28, 1954, and the court sentenced him to five years in federal prison on June 4. He remained on bond during the appeal. The Eighth Circuit ordered a new trial in 1958, and the government dismissed the prosecution on October 10, 1958.
