Biography
Simon Trinidad was a long-time leader in mass movements for social change in Colombia, and is a top negotiator for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). In 2003, he was sent to Ecuador to make contact with UN official James Lemoyne, as part of efforts to revive peace talks with the Colombian gor.He was captured in Ecuador in 2004 and then extradited to the US on charges of narco-trafficking and kidnapping, and subjected to four separate trials, due to repeated mistrials. Ultimately, he was sentenced to 60 years at the Florence “Supermax” prison in Colorado.
Juvenal Ovidio Ricardo Palmera Pineda (Simon Trinidad) was a high-ranking FARC member extradited to the U.S. for the kidnapping of three Americans in Colombia. Convicted at trial of hostage-taking and providing material support to terrorists; sentenced to 720 months federal prison.
The December 2006 report describes one Washington federal mistrial declared November 21 after jury deadlock notes on November 17, 20 and 21. Those three notes are not three separate mistrials. Judge Thomas Hogan presided over the kidnapping-related proceeding concerning three Americans captured after a February 2003 plane crash; the narcotics prosecution was separate.
