Biography

Ray Gogan, a nineteen-year-old Stockton Unemployed Council organizer, was arrested with a worker identified only as Herron while leading a relief demand by seventy-five Mexican workers at the Salvation Army. After the ILD offered $1,000 bail, a disturbing-the-peace charge was added to vagrancy and bail denied. The article calls the punishment eighteen months, but its detailed components are 180 days for each charge plus a $265 fine worked at $2 a day. The conflicting sentence formulations are preserved as imposed punishment, not completed custody. Labor Defender, April 1934, original PDF page 18.
