Biography
Paul Heide was a picket at the L. A. Young Steel and Wire Company strike in Oakland, California. Page 5 reports that police arrested three workers on Wednesday, beat Heide and Green, and held the two under guard in hospital on assault-and-battery accusations. No report dateline fixes which Wednesday is intended, so no exact arrest day is assigned. The hospital custody is documented; individual discharge, conviction and duration are not. The October 31, 1935 Voice of the Federation reports Paul Heide and Robert Moore acquitted of attempted train wrecking in the Santa Cruz Packing strike prosecution and leaving the courthouse with fellow workers. The September 6 report had described their arrest by railroad detectives and called Moore Bob. This earlier prosecution is distinct from Heide’s recorded 1936 L. A. Young case. The two-hour jury deliberation does not measure their confinement. The June 11 Oakland report names Heide and Edward Green as beaten and jailed, accused of battery, refusing to move and resisting an officer. David Harrington was arrested at the same time. This corroborates the existing Oakland picket case without establishing a distinct rearrest or exact endpoint. Daily Worker, June 12, 1936, original PDF page 6.
