Biography

The July 9 Western Worker’s June 29 Compton report identifies MrsNellie Bongye arrested after a June 8 protest against denial of school buildings for a workers demonstration. It says she was walking to a mailbox with her son when a220-pound policeman knocked her down and arrested her. Defense attorney Grover Johnson challenged a jury recruited by the police captain who was the complaining witness; Judge Nelson Ward then scheduled new trial July 13. This is actual arrest and prosecution, with no proved exact discharge or final verdict. Source: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/westernworker/1934/v3-n27-31-jul-1934.pdf#page=5
