Biography

A contemporaneous FBI memorandum corroborates detention followed by release on recognizance. Later reporting records a guilty plea and three years of probation.

The report dates the Chicago firearms-operation arrests to April 11, 1969 and describes the initial bail decisions and later reduction. It identifies Junior as arrested at Illinois Central Railroad Station. Bail-setting and recognizance decisions are not converted into an exact physical discharge date. Chicago firearms prosecution

Nathaniel Junior was an Illinois Black Panther Party field secretary arrested in Chicago on April 11, 1969, in a federal machine-gun purchase operation. A contemporaneous FBI memorandum corroborates detention followed by release on recognizance. Later reporting records a guilty plea and three years of probation.

The Party newspaper reproduced a report of an undercover sale and a large police operation. Contemporary Fifth Estate reporting described the arrests as political repression; that allegation is attributed to the publication.

An April 30, 1969 FBI memorandum identifies Junior and Harvey as Argo-area Panthers and records their release on recognizance and an April 25 court appearance. Its release-date line contains an inconsistent year, so no exact release date or custody duration is assigned here.

Reporting reprinted in the July 20, 1972 Congressional Record identifies both men and Michael White as pleading guilty and receiving probation from Judge Joseph Sam Perry. Probation is distinguished from actual pretrial detention. Other allegations against Junior are separate proceedings and are not merged into this firearms case.

The April 30, 1969 FBI memorandum, NARA docid-32989647 PDF page 40, separately reports that Sergeant Sbarbaro said Nathaniel Junior was arrested by Cook County Sheriff police on April 25 as he left the federal firearms hearing. The reported charge was unlawful possession of narcotics under warrant/indictment 69-1101. This separate reported rearrest is not a new firearms conviction, and no physical-release day or actual custody total is inferred.

The FBI file reproduces descriptive information obtained from Champaign County and Urbana police records on February 9–10, 1969, identifying Nathaniel W. Junior as born October 21, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan. The name and Illinois Panther context match this record; the birth date is source-attributed police biographical information.
