Biography

Michael Hoey, also recorded as Michael Hoy, was an Industrial Workers of the World member jailed during the San Diego free speech fight in 1912. Laura Payne Emerson’s contemporary funeral tribute describes his arrest while speaking against the city’s restriction on public assembly and speech, followed by beatings and mistreatment. He died on March 28, 1912. Fellow prisoners and a physician attributed his death to police violence; the coroner’s account instead cited tuberculosis and heart disease. Contemporary reporting in the Appeal to Reason places his death at Agnes Hospital after his jail confinement. His individual conviction, sentence and precise release or hospital-transfer date have not been established.
