Biography

Sister Mary Ann Kress was a Catholic religious sister and peace activist in Omaha, Nebraska. She earned a graduate degree in theology from the University of Notre Dame in 1975 and worked with an Omaha shelter for survivors of family violence. Kress publicly opposed nuclear-war policy and entered Offutt Air Force Base during the Feast of the Holy Innocents peace witness on December 28, 1981. Military authorities detained her for several hours, issued a barring letter, and released her that day.

Initial Offutt custody confirmed

The original January 17, 1982 Nuclear Resister, printed page 3, individually names Sister Mary Ann Kress among the December 28, 1981 Offutt peace-witness arrestees and reports that the group entered military custody and was released after several hours. The custody-start field records that same-day temporary detention, not a separate jail admission or a served prison sentence. The source marks previously barred participants facing possible prosecution with asterisks; Kress has no asterisk. No conviction or sentence is inferred from a possible maximum penalty for other participants.

A clearly identified, reusable portrait was not established in this review. Same-name obituary, wedding and railroad-litigation records were not merged into this profile.

Case

Charges: Unauthorized entry
Arrested: Dec 28, 1981
Incarcerated: Dec 28, 1981
Released: Dec 28, 1981
Sentence: Temporary military custody for several hours on December 28, 1981, followed by a barring letter and same-day release. This is the initial Offutt detention, not an independently established jail or prison sentence. A zero-calendar-day interval does not mean zero hours in custody.
