Biography

Marie L. Richardson Harris was a Black Washington labor and civil-rights organizer convicted of falsely denying Communist Party membership on a Library of Congress employment form. Judge James Kirkland sentenced her on March 7, 1952 to twenty-eight months to seven years and a $2,000 fine. She remained free during part of the appeal, then was ordered to prison in July 1954 and confined at Alderson, West Virginia. She served roughly four years before parole.
