Biography
Abram Flaxer was president of the United Public Workers of America. He refused to surrender the union’s membership records to the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee in 1951. A jury convicted him of contempt of Congress on October 6, 1953, and the court imposed two months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Appeals stayed the sentence. The Supreme Court vacated the judgment in 1957, and the prosecution ultimately ended without Flaxer serving the jail term.
