Biography

Marcellina Reyes was among forty-one striking vegetable workers arrested May 17, 1936 in the Palos Verdes bean district of California. Page 2 reports that the trial ended in Justice of the Peace Frank Carrell’s Moneta court on June 1. Twenty-nine defendants changed their pleas to guilty on attorney James Carter’s advice and received suspended thirty-day sentences with one year’s probation; twelve others had charges dismissed. The report separately says Reyes, a third woman arrested, pleaded guilty on June 1. It does not individually prove her exact physical discharge day or actual time served; the suspended sentence is not a completed jail term.
