Biography
Ludwig E. Katterfeld was convicted under the Illinois criminal syndicalism law and received a one- to five-year prison sentence. Katterfeld was a founding member of the American Communist Party and a member of the party's Executive Committee. In 1929, he was expelled from the Communist Party for refusing to submit the magazine he had founded to party control. He was described as a "sincere, honest American radical, " who gave "years of his life to the Socialist movement."
The August 4, 1925 Chicago dispatch published August 6 reports that Katterfeld had received final discharge papers after one year actually served at Joliet and a second year on probation outside prison in New York. It identifies the prosecution as conspiracy connected with organizing the 1919 Chicago Communist Labor Party convention. Final discharge from probation is distinct from physical release from Joliet; August 4 is not assigned as that release day. The existing twelve-month actual prison duration is retained.
