Biography

Lawrence Varella was arrested in San Francisco during police raids on radical meeting places in the July 1934 general-strike crackdown. A reproduced police Strike Violence Memo, report 301 dated July 17, 1934, names him among people arrested that day by Lieutenant Malloy and a police posse, with bail set at $20 each. The memo lists his address as 38 Ninth Street; the age is partly cropped and is not transcribed. The facsimile appears in New Masses, August 28, 1934, printed page 8 (PDF page 10). It does not identify an individual charge, conviction, sentence, place or length of imprisonment, or eventual release.
