Biography

Kristin Layng Szakos is a writer, community organizer, and former Charlottesville city councilor. While a student at Grinnell College, she entered Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha during the Feast of the Holy Innocents peace witness on December 28, 1981. Military authorities detained her for several hours, issued a barring letter, and released her that day. She later organized humanitarian solidarity work for Nicaragua, wrote about community organizing, and served two terms on the Charlottesville City Council from 2010 through 2017.

Initial Offutt custody confirmed

The original January 17, 1982 Nuclear Resister, printed page 3, names Kristin Layng among the December 28, 1981 Offutt peace-witness arrestees and explicitly reports that the group was taken into military custody and released after several hours. It further names Layng as re-entering the base after release to deliver the statement. The custody-start field therefore records that same-day temporary military detention; it does not imply a separate jail admission, conviction or served prison sentence.

Case

Charges: Unauthorized entry
Arrested: Dec 28, 1981
Incarcerated: Dec 28, 1981
Released: Dec 28, 1981
Sentence: Temporary military custody for several hours on December 28, 1981, followed by a barring letter and same-day release. This is the initial Offutt detention, not an independently established jail or prison sentence. A zero-calendar-day interval does not mean zero hours in custody.
