Biography

Kathleen Rose was one of eleven-year-old twin sisters arrested on Oakland, California streets for selling the Communist newspaper Western Worker. The January 15, 1935 Daily Worker reports that Kathleen and Eileen were kept in jail for forty-eight hours rather than the Detention Home, and were released after the International Labor Defense demanded their freedom and challenged suppression of the workers' press. It gives no exact arrest or discharge day. Forty-eight hours is the reported duration, not a dated pair of endpoints. Labor Defender, March 1935, PDF page 26: The twins’ account describes police taking them from Oakland newspaper selling to Eastern Station, questioning them separately and transferring them to the Detention Home; the superintendent acknowledged their presence only after 24 hours. It says ILD obtained release without giving an exact day or complete duration. This differs in facility description from the earlier newspaper’s jail account and is preserved as their narrative, not used to overwrite the reported 48-hour total.
