Biography

June Hunter was one of seven Black workers arrested May 26, 1936 during a St. Louis relief-office protest involving American Workers Union representatives. The paper says police first arrested Hoper, Caruthers and Hunter, then arrested four more after protests at an officer’s assault on Hunter. Defense attorneys sought a change of venue as trials opened June 22. The spelling Hoper is preserved. William Caruthers is not identified with the separate Arkansas defendant Jim Caruthers.
