Biography

Matthew A. McLoughlin was secretary-treasurer of Cleaning and Dye House Workers’ Union Local 20 in St. Louis. Police arrested him with two other union officers on August 27, 1937 and held him for eighteen hours while detectives beat him with rubber hoses and paddles in an attempt to force a confession about vandalism during the cleaners’ strike. Friends took him to Jewish Hospital immediately after his release with a ruptured eardrum and other injuries.
