Biography

Juana Colón, known as the Joan of Arc of Comerío, was a washerwoman and Socialist labor organizer in Puerto Rico. The historical movement account reprinted in Que Ondee Sola, March 2010, identifies her leadership among tobacco strippers and repeated jailing for defending workers. It prints a clearly associated portrait and gives a birth year of 1875. Source: https://queondeesola.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/QOS-March-10.pdf#page=7

The National Park Service Historic American Engineering Record report HAER PR-44 independently places her leadership in the 1919 Porto Rico Leaf Tobacco Company strike and identifies her among sixty-nine people arrested for mutiny, with the highest bail. That government report gives March 27, 1886 as her birth date, conflicting with the reprint. No birth date is selected here. Exact individual custody endpoints and completed service are not established. Source: https://tile.loc.gov/storage-services/master/pnp/habshaer/pr/pr1500/pr1504/data/pr1504data.pdf#page=15
